A rare occurrence of an accessory thyroid artery
نویسنده
چکیده
As most anatomy atlases will illustrate, thyroid glands receive their blood supply from one superior thyroid artery arising from the external carotid artery, and from one inferior thyroid artery, branching off the thyrocervical trunk, which also gives rise to the suprascapular, transverse cervical and ascending cervical arteries. In addition to its branches to the inferior region of the thyroid gland, the inferior thyroid artery also vascularizes the parathyroid glands, pharynx, larynx and esophagus. Relatively few textbooks include descriptions of variations in the vessels supplying structures in the neck. Some mention variations in branches of the subclavian artery or the presence of an variant branch directly off the common carotid artery. The most detailed description of arterial variations associated with the recurrent laryngeal nerve, for example, can be found in an anatomy textbook written by Lanz-Wachsmuth [1]. Although this information is very important for surgeons, newer textbooks seldom report cervical vascular variations and only a few articles have been published that describe such variations.

Comment on “An incidental finding of the accessory inferior thyroid artery”
To the Editor, International Journal of Anatomical Variations: I read the recently published article “An incidental finding of the accessory inferior thyroid artery” by Jiri Sedy [1] with keen interest and found the article very enlightening. The authors have provided useful information regarding the variant thyroid artery, which will be helpful for the anatomists and mostly surgeons working on...
متن کاملDangerous course of the brachiocephalic trunk and variations of arteries in the cervical region – a cadaveric case report
The variant anatomy of the branches of the aortic arch is of profound surgical relevance. Altered course of these arteries, if unsuspected, could lead to accidental injury to these vessels and subsequent hemorrhage. During routine dissection of a sixty-five year old female cadaver of Indian origin, we observed a rare compendium of vascular variations in the anterior cervical region. These inclu...
متن کاملAn Uncommon Variation of the Superior Laryngeal Artery
This case study reports a rare variation of the superior laryngeal artery (SLA), which is the principal arterial supply of the larynx. The knowledge of the arterial variations is essential for the surgeons to prevent blood loss and postoperative complications. During routine dissection of an adult male cadaver, a rare arterial variation in the SLA was seen. In this case, the SLA passed through ...
متن کاملHuge Lingual Thyroid
Lingual thyroid (LT) is a rare developmental thyroid anomaly usually affecting. Although the exact pathogenesis of this ectopic, accessory thyroid tissue is not known, it generally originates from epithelial tissue of non-obliterated thyroglossal ductus. In this report, a case of lingual thyroid in a 45- year old male patient with difficulty in breathing and swallowing complaints for five years...
متن کاملUnusual parapharyngeal lesion: aberrant thyroid gland.
An ectopic location of the thyroid gland usually occurs in the midline, starting anywhere from the tongue to the diaphragm. The occurrence of an ectopic thyroid gland in a non-midline site is extremely rare. We report a 32-year-old Malay woman with an aberrant thyroid gland presenting as a parapharyngeal lesion. She had a normally functioning thyroid gland. An ectopic thyroid should be consider...
